agree  Charles Davis: I had an Anglican upbringing and the words are engraved on my memory: "If any of you know cause or just impediment why these persons should not be joined together in Holy Matrimony, ye are to declare it."

  -> Unlike here in Mexico, I rarely set foot in a church when I lived in England, but I do remember an aunt of mine having the "banns read" before she got married. Thanks, Charles.

agree  philgoddard: Me too, Charles! And "spinster of this parish". I was in the choir and we used to get paid 75p per wedding.

  -> I suppose we all had Christian upbringings in England back then because that's the way most schools were. Thankfully, my family was lapsed enough that I was spared all that churchgoing :-) Thanks, Phil.

agree  JohnMcDove: Amen to all that! ;-)

  -> Bless you, John :-)

agree  Yvonne Gallagher: yes, in RC too . Canon law required the banns until 1983. Now it's a matter for individual parishes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banns_of_marriage

  -> Thanks for the info, Yvonne.

agree  neilmac: Banns came up the other day in something I was doing; it's a thing you don't hear so much nowadays.

disagree  AllegroTrans: any example to back this up? where is this term used?

neutral  Charles Davis: "Admonition" exists in English but it's a formal word for a warning or rebuke; "moniciones", in this sense, are always called banns, both in British and in American English.

disagree  Yvonne Gallagher: no, the word is 'banns' in this context

disagree  neilmac: O sea, "tres rapapolvos de cuidado"... :)
