I believe the meaning is the whole issue was swept under the carpet.
As Toni pointed out, it should say "a la que" and not "al que" but I they are referring to the trial itself. Anyway, the pronoun is not correct.

agree  Marcelo González: This seems to fit, while conveying a bit of the (likely intended) idiomatic flavor of the original. I wonder if the 'al que' could have referred to 'un caso al que ...' but, for whatever reason, didn't make its way into the text.
