Spanish term or phrase: nombre cambiado
This is a text by a Chilean thinker about maps and territories. The obvious translation is "changed name" but I think she is getting at something else, something more specific:

En un comienzo, los expertos se esforzaron por encontrar dicha línea en antiguos mapas, con la idea de que en el pasado colonial se forjaban los cimientos de las naciones modernas. Pero esos mapas contaban derroteros de otros tiempos, y ahí donde debía estar la línea había, en cambio, espacios vacíos, nombres cambiados, pliegues y equívocos del paso del dibujo al grabado. Eran un archivo de prácticas geopolíticas imperiales y tecnologías superadas que no respondía al esfuerzo de delimitación nacional.

hard to tell exactly but the overall context leads me to think this might work...covers the ambiguity (and plural in your context of course)

the names may have been innocently or deliberately modified... I remember translating a delineation border dispute involving Argentina and Chile and this was an issue...
