Traduje de este modo: "the poor passengers feel threatened due to many hours of overcrowding."

Muchas gracias.

hours spent cooped up

Explanation:
Overcrowding is not wrong, but here's a slightly more colloquial version.

Or you could say "hours packed together like sardines".

disagree  Barbara Cochran, MFA: People are cooped up in houses or apartments, not on airplanes, for the most part. There are only about 230,000 hits for "cooped up in an airplane, while there are more than 12 million for "cooped up in a house or apt".

  -> Not where I live.

agree  David Hollywood: "cooped up" works for me albeit a tad free and agree with Barbara on that point

hours of overcrowding

Explanation:
"The unfortunate/poor passengers feel threatened by so many hours of overcrowding on the plane"

Example sentence(s):
  • abordar con urgencia la cuestión del hacinamiento. - the overcrowding should be addressed as a priority issue.
  • severe overcrowding in rental units. - hacinamiento severo en las unidades de alquiler.
