This term keeps coming up in the document and encapsulates the research activity itself (which is repeated each year).
I understand what it means but am struggling to find a concise word for it.
Any ideas much appreciated!

Thanks everyone for your help. As you know, in the end, I went for "survey" because it fitted the context best.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks Robert, but metrics are used much more for IT/online marketing than for market research companies. And I can't see how I can say, for example "as happened in the previous metric"... The term basically means "the qualitative research process to measure how well the company is doing compared to last year". But how to say that pithily is eluding me at the moment!

Asker: Thanks Phil, but whilst I am very grateful for Robert's suggestion, it is definitely not "metric", which has a specifically scientific/IT connotation. That is not to say that it's not a good word! Just not in this context. "Survey" is the word in this context. Apologies one and all for the disruption!

agree  philgoddard: This basically means survey, but metric is a good synonym and I don't think the asker should reject it.
