Spanish term or phrase: dependientes
This is a text about the exploitation of Indigenous peoples by the Spanish and then the independent nation in Argentina:

dependiente/s
indentured servant/s

Explanation:
Indentured does not always mean a contract has been signed up tp to or imposed, rather figuratively that a master-indentured servant relationship exists.

Example sentence(s):
  • An indentured servant or indentured laborer is an employee (indenturee) within a system of unfree labor who is bound by a signed or forced contract (indenture)
  • An indentured servant or indentured laborer is an employee (indenturee) within a system of unfree labor who is bound by a signed or forced contract (indenture) to work without pay for the owner of the indenture for a period of time.

neutral  Francois Boye: is it true in this context?

  -> Dependiente literally means an employee and, in the UK, would be subject to an employer-employee 'control test'. These native Indians would have been unlikely to have been offered a contract of employment, rather been treated as 'indentured' labo/u/r.
