help someone take a bath Explanation: I think "leer baños" is just an error in the original. Although in Spanish "hacer baños" sounds more like cleaning bathrooms, the context suggests that señora Raquel did chores (watering plants, helping sick people take baths) and read letters to illiterate maids. see note Explanation: I found a web site that may help you. Its title is "Los neochamanismos Urbanos en Manizales y en la zona cafetera de los Andes Colombianos. Entre la brujería y el chamanismo. Antecedentes y primeras búsquedas," and it mentions baños and riegos, and lists a whole lot of things that are "read." I found these next ones in the source code, because I couldn’t find them on the page itself: Hacer ***riegos***, rezos, conjuros, ritos, ramas, bebidas. [Averiguar sobre amor, salud, trabajo, muerte, suerte, problemas, necesidades] http://www.etnopsico.org/textos/ronderos/3.htm Based on the above, I'd say the translation is literal. Just like we'd say read tea leaves or palms, the person in your text apparently reads baths (can't imagine how) and also gives them. So maybe you could say "reads/interprets baths" and "gives/administers baths," or something like that. Hope it helps. Reference: http://www.etnopsico.org/textos/ronderos/3.htm |
