Spanish term or phrase: por canalización
I think this means 'indirectly' or 'online'. Or could it have something to do with referral? Do you agree?

• Casas visitadas: Se realiza actividades de promoción comunitaria sobre Paludismo, se visitan 37.606 casas en la búsqueda comunitaria de febriles y 801 casas **por canalización**.

English translation:by referral (as a result of referrals)
Explanation:
I agree with your idea of referral, as that's definitely what it means where I live, and it seems applicable to your text too.

Do you think it might be better to use the plural here, Muriel?

In response to John's comment, the way I understood it was 37,606 homes were visited by going house to house and that 801 homes were visited as a result of referrals, whether through word of mouth on the doorstep or using health records, or some other referral mechanism.

Another example of the use of "canalización" as "referral" in Mexico:

Canalización a especialistas de Otorrinolaringología-Audiología, Traumatología y Ortopedia, Neurocirugía, Psiquiatría y Genética.

Thanks again, Robert!
I'm convinced. I don't think it's just a regional expression.

via pipeline - pipeline corridor ? / by opening vias - channels

Explanation:
I am not sure how this "referral" would work here.

Some additional context probably would help to figure this one out.

I understand "canalizar" as
DRAE
4. tr. Recoger corrientes de opinión, iniciativas, aspiraciones, actividades, etc., y orientarlas eficazmente.

It could also be 1., "by opening vias" "opening channels"?

awareness raising (with malaria guidelines)

Explanation:
For example, mosquitoes that avoided walls sprayed with DDTwere “evasive,” malaria-persistent regions were called “problem areas,” and public acceptance of health interventions was a result of the effective educational work of “sensitization,” or, in Spanish, canalización, which meant to make people comply with malaria ...
