Surplus is a somewhat ubiquitous term, it signals some positive balance.

It is used in macroeconomics and monetary theory (balance of payments) in microeconomics (consumer surplus, producer surplus) and in accounting and finance (more loosely, surplus funds or surplus cash = superávit de caja o de tesorería = “El superávit de caja es la situación en la que los cobros exceden a los pagos en un periodo determinado.”

My rebuttal is the following: Neil could not find the definition of surplus funds in the internet.

My explanation is that such a concept makes sense in Spanish, but not in English.

I don’t necessarily see a conflict here.

Although I recognize the normally high correlation between positive net worth and liquidity, at some times, we may have a somewhat transitory combination of positive net worth and low liquidity.

I just think that, for this particular context positive net worth is not the best option. I don’t mean it is incorrect, it’s just that Neil’s take better fits the context.

Let’s think of a positive net worth manufacturer with a big plant & equipment base: union decided to go on strike, say 3 months. Business interruption would deprive the company of its liquid assets, cash for the most part. So our manufacturer would not be able to lend money, but still be a positive net worth company.

Think of some other manufacturer: it has a liquidity ratio of say .6, and positive net worth, but, since it lacks the cash to cover daily operations, it won’t be able to lend to someone else.

I just think that, for this particular context positive net worth is not the best option. I don’t mean –absolutely not- that +net worth is not correct, it’s just that Neil’s take better fits this particular context. That’s why I have chosen to vote neutral.
