I can't figure out whether this "вид" refers to a species or something more general, like a "view." (In other words, I haven't the faintest idea of what the author is talking about!)

Отрицательные эмоции «нужны» индивидууму для того, чтобы указывать на незаконченность действия или на его неадекватность исходной программе; сон «нужен» для того, чтобы просеивать текущую за день информацию и отбирать полезную; сновидения - чтобы давать «разрядку функционально напряженным системам головного мозга» или, если иметь в виду его роль в «далеком филогенетическом прошлом» человека, для физиологической мобилизации организма в условиях внезапно возникшей во время сна опасности, «для закрепления опыта повседневной жизни» (по И.Е. Вольперту) и т.д. Если же что-либо трудно или невозможно объяснить, исходя из постулата сообразности, соответствующее явление рассматривают либо как болезненное, то есть случайное для представителей **вида,** либо его провозглашают уходящим из жизни **вида** как лишнее, ненужное (смелость отдельных авторов распространила действие того же постулата сообразности даже на эмоции человека, ср. «Эмоции - цыгане нашей психики» - В. Джеймс).
Разумеется, трудно найти исследователя, который бы открыто защищал представления об узко приспособительной направленности психических процессов. Однако наиболее распространенная позиция многих авторов отвечает именно постулату сообразности.
Выделим две ступени критического рассмотрения этого постулата.

Asker: I know what a species is! What I don't know is whether that is the correct translation here, since "вид" has many possible translations!
