In my experience, this was only done (if at all) in my son's school in the very youngest grades, on the first day of school, to make sure the kid gets on the right bus going home. Otherwise, nowadays the kids all have backpacks, and the teachers put anything going to the parents in there. I guess poor Edison didn't have a backpack.

It is not usually mean-spirited. It is usually just to make sure the child doesn't lose the note.

When I heard the expression it was kind of strange to me, as I'm not familiar with things pinned on a student, especially by their teachers. It just sounds strange, funny and probably humiliating? I was like, how would you pin something on a student? And what if the student removed it? And the worst thing is when you write something so embarrassing to the student that makes everyone make fun of them.

Teachers in the UK don't do this as far as I know, but on several occasions my daughter has failed to know something she should have known because my grandson forgot to bring a note home, so I think there is something to be said for it.

Teachers and parents in the US apparently still communicate with each other by literally pinning notes on children:

"TRANSPORTATION TIPS FOR PARENTS
For the first two weeks of school, please pin a note on your primary grade child’s clothing with the following data: Name, Bus #, Bus Stop, emergency phone number, and Teacher’s Name."
