As I see it:
A "normal lien" (prenda real) is when you sign something, with a specific item - a house for example - as the guarantee. The common law lien is when there is no specific item. If you have a debt, for whatever reason, the "common law lien" is everything, or anything, you have. If someone sues me and wins, and I don't pay, they can take anything I have to the value of what I have to pay. That's the common law lien; in Spanish "derecho de prenda general":

2.- CONCEPTO DEL DERECHO DE PRENDA GENERAL.- Para tener un concepto preciso de este derecho, es necesario diferenciarlo del derecho real de prenda. Lo que se denomina “derecho de prenda general de los acreedores”, es el gravamen que pesa sobre la totalidad del patrimonio del deudor a favor de su acreedor, por el hecho sólo de contraer con él el vínculo jurídico denominado obligación, y que nace en el momento mismo de obligarse.

En el derecho real de prenda se individualizan por medio de la convención de las partes, uno o más bienes determinados del deudor, los cuales quedan especialmente afectos al cumplimiento de la obligación principal, y en esta determinación se encuentra la diferencia esencial entre ambas instituciones jurídicas.

neutral  Adrian MM.: You've effectively reworded my answer, besides which a land lien in E&W (as opposed to the US) is not poss. - it's called a property or floating co. charge.//You were the one who mentioned a 'house' which, as a building, is land in ENG law.
