I need help with the translation of Gardiners Clay.

Prior to the southward movement of the Pleistocene ice sheets to Long Island, an extensive clay unit (Gardiners Clay) was deposited in shallow marine and brackish waters along the shores of what is now Suffolk County. This unit rested upon the Magothy and Monmouth Group, and acted as a confining layer. The northern portions of the Gardiners Clay were subsequently eroded by advancing ice and glacial meltwaters. Consequently, Gardiners Clay beds are now found only in the south shore area.

".... lo cambió por "un perro negro grande, algo de pólvora y balas y algunas mantas holandesas". Indignante.
En fin, quedó aclarado el origen el nombre. Fue el gamberro de Gardiner:-) Gracias, Charles.

Viene de Gardiners Island (la Isla Gardiners), situada en el extremo oriental de Long Island (NY). Así que supongo que podría denominarse "arcilla Gardiners", aunque no he encontrado ninguna referencia en español.

Pleistocene: Southeastern New York (Long, Gardiners, and Fishers Islands) and islands of southern New England (Block, Nantucket, Marthas Vineyard, No Mans Land, and probably Cape Cod).

El nombre de Gardiners Island proviene, a su vez, de Lion Gardiner, que la compró a los indios Montaukett en 1639, a cambio de "un perro negro grande, algo de pólvora y balas y algunas mantas holandesas".

IMO puedes dejarlo tal como sugiere John: "arcilla (de) Gardiner". Al no ser que quieres redactar la frase y dejarlo como "materia fosilizada de la edad pleistoceno" o algo así.
