English term or phrase: Foundation of the Subject
Descartes and the Foundation of the Subject

Descartes assumed that all knowledge had to be doubted. Any idea that could be doubted had to be rejected
in order to find a foundation for genuine knowledge. This “methodical doubt,” rejecting perception
as unreliable and admitting only deduction as a method, led him to one basic principle: Thought
exists. And since thought cannot be separated from the thinking subject, I also exist. Only the sentence
“I think, therefore I am” is in itself conclusive and hence serves the foundation of the subject.

Russian translation:
Explanation:
Речь идёт о выражении Декарта "Cogito, ergo sum", по-английски: “I think, therefore I am”, по русски: "Я мыслю, следовательно, я существую".
