In terms of microbiological methods the key categorical performances characteristics are defined by ISO 13843:2017 as:
Sensitivity - the fraction of the total positives correctly assigned in the presumptive count;
Specificity - the fraction of the total negatives correctly assigned in the presumptive count;
Selectivity - the ratio of the number of target colonies/wells/tubes to the total number of colonies/wells/tubes in the sample volume.
The other characteristics assessed are false-positive rate, false-negative rate and efficiency.
Samples containing 20 to 80 target organisms per volume examined are analysed.
Naturally contaminated samples from at least five sources are preferred or at least two from different sources for the preparation of artificial samples.
The samples are then examined by the procedure being studied.
