English term or phrase: relative to its curvature.
Another SF novel.
Explanation: a star is surrounded by a kind of geodesic sphere, a kind of web, but the sphere is not complete, a piece is missing. The star's light is mostly obscured, light can only escape through the gap.
The whole construction is seen from a spaceship and as a hologram.

Text: The web's orbit had brought the hole into direct opposition with the ship, The dazzling glare had prevented him (the captain) from making out the gap's borders, but the illustration (the hologram) defined them clearly. Three AUs tall and half an AU wide, relative to its curvature, it looked so small to the rest of the structure - though he knew the distances to be daunting.

My problem is 'relative to its curvature'. Does it mean, a piece of the sphere's surface is measured on the sphere, or is it taken out, flattened and measured in two dimensions?
I can only hope I've made this clear enough.
