Tech/Engineering - Physics / Pressure gauge description
English term or phrase: retard
Built-in retard (100-150 PSI) protects gauge from over-pressure damage.

Régulateur, variateur, variomètre?

Pour FR-CA. Merci.

Not sure if the category is correct though... That pressure gauge is connected to an automotive display system.

Explanation:
I have had great difficulty finding any mention at all of this technology in FR, but here is a Canadian patent where the title has been translated as '(indicateur à) retard':

http://patents.ic.gc.ca/opic-cipo/cpd/eng/help/content/help_...

Sadly, the actual text of the patent does not appear in translation, and I have to say that the non-translation of the title is pretty much a cop out.

I am slightly mystified by the EN term, since there really is no temporal element to the 'retard' here, it is purely a device for 'manipulating' the display range of the gauge.

I feel sure there must be a proper translation in FR, but I have spent quite a lot of time trying in vain to research anything on the 'Net; certainly, there are several manufacturers of such devices, but so far I have not found any information translated (reliably!) into FR.

Thanks. I refers here to a built-in mechanism. "Temporisateur" would be an external mechanism with a similar function.

Reference: Retard Gauge

Reference information:
Here is a definition quoted from a standard relating to pressure gauges:

"A gauge having a scale that is compressed at one end, or both ends. For example, a gauge may have a range, such as 0 – 80 psi, which is not a full scale range. A retarded or compressed range may extend the gauge to a maximum pressure of 250 psi. Pressures as high as the maximum pressure shown on the dial face will not damage the gauge, or affect its accuracy."

So it's a way of compressing the scale in order to allow useful readings over the important part of the range; similar to the notion of a suppressed-zero voltmeter, for example.
