English term or phrase: Gene names
Hello,

I am proofreading a text on genetics and the translator has attempted to translate all gene names from English into French when they were spelt (for example "The chromodomain helicase DNA binding protein 2 (CHD2) gene").

What is the gene naming convention? Do we actually translate them?

Many thanks,
Marion

French translation:yes, translate them
Explanation:
We never translate gene symbols (obviously). However, we sometimes translate gene names and very often the names of the proteins they code for (in the case of protéin-coding genes).

acetylcholinesterase -> acétylcholinestérase
tubulin -> tubuline
etc.

agree  Lionel-N: Bien évidemment; comme tu le dis, on n'écrit pas "tubulin" mais "tubuline". Cela dit, énormément de gènes n'ont pas de traduction officielle et, par ex, le gène "chromodomain helicase DNA binding protein 2" (CHD2) qui reste en EN
