Le terme a été inventé par le cinéma américain magazine spécialisé Variety suite à l'explosion de films dans le genre publié en 1973 aux États - Unis après le succès des cinq doigts de la mort . Le mot est un jeu de chop suey , combinant « hacher » (comme dans côtelette de karaté se référant à une grève avec le tranchant de la main) et « chaussette » (comme dans un coup de poing ).

No  Samantha Hind: Je suis désolée mais ce terme ne fonctionne pas. L'extrait Wiki a été mal traduit de l'anglais, et ce terme ne se trouve pas ailleurs. Dans le texte, 'sock' ne veut pas dire 'chaussette', mais 'coup de poing'. Je suis en train d'écrire une alternative.

Le terme "kung-fu" représente l'idée de "chop-socky", mais il n'y a pas d'équivalent exact. Le terme vient d'un jeu de mots entre le "chop" de chop-suey (faisant référence a la Chine/Hong-Kong /Taiwan) et le terme "sock" qui, en argot anglais, signifie "cogner/frapper".

Cela dit, une traduction possible serait :

chop-fu

pour maintenir l'origine "chop-suey", et pour faire allusion au "kung-fu".
