English term or phrase: Van
Is the word "van" as a part of a Dutch surname supposed to be capitalized or not?
(Example, Jan Van Ijk, Jan van Ijk, Mr. van Ijk?) I think I have seen it both capitalized and lower case. Please advise what the actual correct way is?

Dutch translation:both are possible, depending on a.o. country,...
Explanation:
In The Netherlands it'll usually be in lower case.
In Belgium it'll be capitalized unless you're dealing with nobility.

agree  Nicole_BC (X): Agree, be aware though, that in the Netherlands it is Jan van IJk, but Mr. Van IJk

agree  Sandra van Bijsterveld (X): In NL: lower case when preceded by a first name or initial. If not (just the last name or only preceded by mr., mrs. etc.), then capitalised.
