Dutch term

darmlas

Dutch to English Tech/Engineering Engineering: Industrial Pharma manufacturing
In a description of some machinery on a pharmaceutical production line:

De holding tank wordt geconnecteerd aan de assembly met een darmlas, de aansluiting van de assembly met de isolator wordt gemaakt met een intrinsiek aseptische connector.

Is it some kind of connection between two soft tubes?

It's outside my normal field and I'm stumped. All help greatly appreciated.

@Steve: I forgot to ask, is the text Belgian?
Steve Robbie (asker) Jul 30, 2021:
Thanks to all for you I'll go with Michael's suggestion, which makes sense in the surrounding context.
I was worried that this might be a highly specific technical term, so thanks to all of you for confirming that it probably isn't.
Jack den Haan Jul 29, 2021:
Context The term 'darmlas' would make sense in the context of intestinal laser surgery. See https://phys.org/news/2013-05-material-laser-welding-tissue-... for example. That doesn't seem to fit in with the specified context however.
Textpertise Jul 29, 2021:
Suspect coined word darmlas. Maybe TIG welding I have experience of working for a Dutch company that sold welding equipment. I have never heard of the term darmlas and searching the Internet to see if any equipment by this name has come onto the market since those days makes me none the wiser. I suspect, from the quality of the Dunglish, that someone has tried to translate from English to Dutch who is not a Dutch-speaking expert in the field or indeed an expert in the field at all. The person in question may have coined this word to describe a welding technique used for joining tubes or pipes made of flexible metal. That welding technique is well-established and is called TIG welding. It was called that both in English and in Dutch back when I worked in the field. I suggest that you certainly raise a query with your client about this because as far as I can tell, the term darmlas is non-existent in Dutch or if it exists, it is certainly non-standard..
Ruchira Raychaudhuri Jul 29, 2021:
Perhaps relevant.. You mentioned a 'pharmaceutical production line', so these links might help:
http://www.gfitool.com/automatic-pipe-welding-machine-pharma...
https://www.olympus-ims.com/en/insight/3-ways-to-maintain-pr...
https://resources.arcmachines.com/sanitary-tube-welding-for-...

So, 'tube/tubing welder' or 'tube/pipeline welding equipment', 'pipe welding machine' (since the word 'las' is part of the term, 'welding' could be included in the translation).
Steve Robbie (asker) Jul 29, 2021:
It's the original... ... despite all the English words. Source is Belgian.

Source? Is this original EN or a translation into EN?

tube joint

Van Dale has:
darm:
#2 (in België) slang
hose
tube

The Comprehensive Dictionary of Industry and Technology (Graham P. Oxtoby) has:

las:
1. (film, tape) splice
2. (verbinding) weld, weld seam, welding, weldment joint
3. (verbindingsstuk) strap, connecting strap
4. weld, welded joint
5. (m.b.t. kunststoffen) weld, seal
6. weld, joint

My educated guess is therefore:

darmlas= tube joint

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense.

Thanks!
agree Barend van Zadelhoff : BE slang, funny: een 'slang' ziet eruit als een 'darm' (intestine, bowel) --> slanglas; 'las' possibly 'koppel-/verbindingsstuk': tubing connector / joint
