elitary in a sense. It has been slightly degraded over the last ten years due to some misconceptions about translation, but it is picking up, and it will rise from the ashes of certain computer nonsense like the Phoenix -- quite soon.

The issues are highly complex, as is the work that we often do. Here is probably not the place to bring up this messy web of issues, but certainly as long as translators accept crappy terms (pay and deadlines) and blindly accept that a Trados "match" isn't worth being compensated for, we will continue to dig our own grave.

The sad part is that the lacking recognition stems from within the business (translators and agencies). On the other hand, this means we have the power to change that ourselves by not accepting ridiculous terms and conditions. | | | neilmac Spain Local time: 22:13 Spanish to English + ...
For me, the proof is in little details - like the number of times I've searched in vain for a "translator" box to tick on application forms, before finally grudgingly having to settle for the less defined category of "Other", which always makes me feel slightly unworthy. I feel this can only be due to translation's lack of recognition of as a profession. | | | Julian Holmes Japan Local time: 05:13 Member (2011) Japanese to English Agree completely | Aug 6, 2013 |

I feel this can only be due to translation's lack of recognition of as a profession. Here, here. I'm never comfortable having to be pigeonholed under "Other" for lack of the "Translator" option. We are a "stealth" profession, off-the-radar and undetectable -- which could be put to our advantage thanks to the mystical aura vaguely enwrapping our presence. But. ultimately, I suppose we will be forced to sublimely accept our position as "Other" or "Service industry," neither of which is a favorable prospect. Sigh.... | |
