Source text - Italian Le persone che lavorano da Babbel sono – chi più chi meno – multilingui.
Esplorando i nostri uffici di Berlino, sentirete parlare tantissime lingue ma non vedrete mai dei manuali o dei corsi “vecchio stile”.
Il principio di Babbel, infatti, è che gli studenti dovrebbero trascorrere circa 20 minuti al giorno con la nuova lingua.
Si tratta di un tempo incredibilmente breve se comparato alle lunghissime lezioni che frequentavamo a scuola o all’università!
Come è possibile?
Ho chiesto a Karoline Schnur, una delle esperte in didattica delle lingue di Babbel, in che modo 20 minuti al giorno sono sufficienti per iniziare a parlare una nuova lingua.
Il metodo Babbel
Il principio cardine del metodo Babbel è il seguente:
“Non riuscirai ad assorbire nulla, se cercherai di imparare troppe nozioni in una volta”.
Si tratta del cosiddetto “surplus di informazioni”.
Karoline spiega che è il cervello a decidere quali sono le informazioni importanti e quali invece creano solo rumore di fondo.
Queste ultime vengono messe da parte e non entrano mai nel magico regno della memoria a lungo termine.
Karoline ha anche sfatato il falso mito dello studio “matto e disperatissimo” dell’ultimo minuto, quello – per dirlo con altre parole – del quale ci servivamo prima di un esame universitario.
Utile nel breve periodo, ma quanto riuscivamo a ricordare dopo una settimana?
Non molto, probabilmente.
Invece di studiare tanto in poco tempo, è più importante ripetere spesso una mole più contenuta di informazioni: per inserire informazioni nella memoria a lungo termine, infatti, è indispensabile creare connessioni e ripeterle frequentemente.

Un approccio scientifico che funziona
La ripetizione, nella app di Babbel, è resa possibile da diversi esercizi e differenti contesti che permettono di creare le connessioni di cui abbiamo parlato prima.
Alcune parole imparate nella prima lezione appariranno probabilmente in lezioni avanzate e in contesti completamenti diversi: il mondo è dinamico ed è importante ricordare le parole che abbiamo imparato in ogni contesto, non solo quello all’interno del quale le abbiamo studiate la prima volta.
Dato che la ripetizione è essenziale, la app di Babbel contiene un trainer di ripasso con questo specifico obiettivo: elaborare i concetti e trasferirli nella memoria a lungo termine.
I consigli di Karoline per imparare le lingue
Imparate “per strada”
Dato che le lezioni di Babbel sono strutturate in modo tale da durare non più di 20 minuti, Karoline consiglia di scegliere un momento della giornata in cui sapete di non avere nient’altro da fare.
Un esempio: mentre siete in fila alla posta oppure in metropolitana diretti al lavoro.
Studiare una lingua è il modo perfetto per combattere la noia!
Trovate il vostro metodo di studio
Alcuni di noi amano la routine, altri invece si annoiano presto:
Karoline consiglia di scegliere le lezioni a seconda della vostra personalità.
Quelli che preferiscono creare degli schemi fissi e ripeterli, generalmente preparano un orario settimanale e lo rispettano; gli altri invece svolgono la lezione di cui hanno voglia in quel momento, cambiando spesso la tipologia.
Il bello di Babbel è proprio questo.
Siate sicuri di voi stessi ed esercitatevi
Karoline consiglia di dedicare almeno un giorno alla settimana alla pratica: dialoghi con persone madrelingua, un film in versione originale… in altre parole, usate le vostre nuove conoscenze nella vita reale e vi sentirete più sicuri di voi stessi (e certo, migliorerete sempre di più il vostro livello).
Create l’abitudine
La cosa più importante, comunque, è imparare qualcosa (anche poco) ogni giorno.
Anche se avete solo 5 minuti di tempo anziché 20, è sempre meglio di niente.
Il segreto per diventare fluenti, infatti, è quello di esercitarsi tutti i giorni.

I asked Karoline Schnur, one of Babbel’s language experts, how 20 minutes per day c enough to start speaking a new language.
Babbel’s technique
Babbel’s fundamental principle is the following:
“You won’t learn anything, if you study too many things together”.
It is called “information surplus”.
Karoline explains that it is the brain that decides what is important and what is redundant.
Reduntant information will be put aside by the brain and never get to long term memory.
Karoline also dispelled the myth of last minute “crazy and desperate” studying, the method we used before a university exam.
It was useful in a short period of time, but how much of it would we remember after a week?
Not much, probably.
Instead of studying hard in a short amount of time, it is more important to study a smaller amount of information more often: to commit information to your long term memory, actually, it is essential to make connections and repeat everything frequently.

A scientific approach that works
Repetition, on the Babbel’s app, is possible through various exercises and different contexts which allow to create the connections mentioned before.
Some words learned in the first lesson will probably appear in advanced lessons and in completely different contexts: the world is dynamic so it is important to remember all the words we have used in various contexts, not just the one we saw them in for the first time.
Since repetition is essential, the Babbel’s app offers a review trainer that has a specific goal: to process information and transfer it to long term memory.
Karoline’s advice on how to learn languages
Learn “on the move”
Since lessons last no more then 20 minutes, Karoline advises to pick a time of the day where you have nothing else to do.
An example: while queueing at the post office or on the metro going to work.
Studying a foreign language is the perfect way to fight boredom!
Find your study method
Some people like routine, others get bored easily:
Karoline advises to choose lessons according to your personality.
Those who prefer to create and repeat fixed plans, set a weekly schedule and stick to it; others prefer to take the lessons they like, changing the typology when they like.
The best thing about Babbel is just that.
Feel confident and practice
Karoline advises to practice at least once per week: conversations with native speakers, watch films in the original language... In other words, use what you learn and you will feel more confident (you’ll improve more and more).
Have a habit
The most important thing, anyway, is to learn something (even a little) every day.
Even if you have just 5 minutes and not 20, it is better then nothing.
The secret to becoming fluent is to practice every day.

I have spent my entire working career in jobs where I have been required to speak English with clients. I worked with DHL in Cork, Ireland, then in Rome Airport dealing with travellers' enquiries, and most recently for a tour guide company in Rome which caters exclusively to English speaking tourists.
