.... having the babies. But don´t call this vacation
Sometimes it is good to change clients, it offers new possibilities, so I am not sad at all.

Hmmm....... Jul 26, 2012

I do not seem to be able to determine the purpose of this poll. Anyone else confused? I mean a "regular" customer should know the concept of vacation, right?

Because I believe in service provider loyalty and am ALWAYS available for my regular clients whenever physically possible. I even once finished a translation for one of them from my hospital bed with a double wrist fracture that had been operated on the same day. The client brought me a laptop and I finished it with my one good hand.

PS: I don't really care about the motives for the poll question - I treat them as not all that serious - sort of like talking to some strange "man in the pub" who strikes up a conversation - and might even tell them a lot of nonsense if the fancy takes me...

They often drag their heels over giving me work again - it takes anything up to a week for things to get flowing again sometimes.

... I take my laptop with me for any urgent requests from regular clients that may arise, although most are sympathetic to the concept of a holiday and do not bombard me with projects over the time I am away.

I do, however, inform all my regular clients before I am away for a few days that my capacity will be limited. Since I got back from my week's holiday on Monday, things have quickly returned to their normal workflow though!

On the contrary! Jul 26, 2012

I have this client who just changed her delivery deadlines and made her client change their schedule so I could get married and take my 2-week vacation as planned and do the translation myself.

They really wanted ME to do the job, I was so flattered!

I had a similar experience, except of the getting married part.

Likewise (except for the week's holiday: I haven't take mine yet!)

I may have captured a few Jul 26, 2012

I avoid taking breaks in the schools' half-term holidays and smaller breaks like that. Sometimes I am madly busy those weeks and need a break later, but I may even have captured a client or two that way.

However, I think most of the extra work comes from my regular clients when colleagues with children are taking time off. Things get back to normal after the break.

I've had a couple of regular clients who piled up work while I was on vacation, and dumped the entire stack on me upon my return. Btw, they DID warn me via e-mail while I was away, Get some good rest there, because we have a ton of work for you to do as soon as you get back!

Good riddance to them if that's how they do business... Jul 26, 2012

... but like Christine we sometimes pick up new clients when their ordinary translators are away.

As for those who remain available when you're on vacation - that's not a vacation then, is it?

So far I've only lost recurring (is it better than regular?) clients after rate increases. Or bankruptcy.
