Please keep in mind that my suggested "trials" did not mean "judicial proceedings" (proceso judicial), but only "attempts" (intentos, tentativas)... Also note that "prosecution" was suggested before the whole context was made available. Thank you

: I don't know if it's the same throughout the rest of Latin America, but in Argentina "el proceso" refers to the time when there were military governments.

Based on what you say about the preceding context, I think "de proceso" is redundant. It's better to be vague than to insert a concept that isn't there. So I'd say, "In the last 20 years, some progress has been made."
