Discussion

Cecilia Gowar Aug 14, 2017:
@Leila You are welcome but if you have the possibility to contact the author(s) it would be a good idea. There is not much to go by here....
Cecilia Gowar Aug 14, 2017:
@Helena I don't know... in a bed bound person they could be referring the bed rails I believe....
Leila Howden (asker) Aug 14, 2017:
Thank you Cecilia!! :)
Helena Chavarria Aug 14, 2017:
'barreras' are often 'restraints'
Cecilia Gowar Aug 14, 2017:
@Leila The text in capital letters matches the Spanish Version of VH's needs theory. So they would be headings. The text in lower case seems to be the specific comments regarding the patient. But the only one which makes sense is "Uso de barreras" (Use of rails?) under "Need to avoid dangers". It is not well written in Spanish. If I had to guess I would say the patient is completely dependent (suplencia total).
Leila Howden (asker) Aug 14, 2017:
Hi Cecilia sorry I thought I had directly replied and wondered what you thought in terms of the specific patient context? Many thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks Joseph, Helena and Phil too!
Helena Chavarria Aug 14, 2017:
@Leila From what I can gather, its a system where you have to tick the appropriate boxes, according to each patient. They all have different needs, some people can do a series of things independently while others can't. The last column is for the 'datos a considerar'.
Cecilia Gowar Aug 14, 2017:
Well I do not know if you had a look at my answer, but I believe it does mean "manifestación" because the pattern you provided matches the Virginia Henderson basic needs theory.
Leila Howden (asker) Aug 14, 2017:
Thanks everyone. Going off an independent document regarding the patient do you think it can be manifestación de independencia as the patient has very low level of consciousness so not sure he could do these things independently? He had to have full oxygen support at one point. He is being discharged to be taken to home country by air ambulance
Helena Chavarria Aug 14, 2017:
I forgot to mention that slide 3 is useful:

Helena Chavarria Aug 14, 2017:
I think it means 'Manifestación de (in)dependencia' (see reference below).

Signs of being (in)dependent?
Joseph Tein Aug 14, 2017:
It looks like this is all the background and context available (thanks for adding the information) ... and it's still mysterious.

Just guessing: M. might be "monitorear"? "manejar"?

Leila Howden (asker) Aug 14, 2017:
I was stumped too as very little explanation.

Here is how it reads:

VALORACIÓN POR NECESIDADES
N.RESPIRAR.
M.INDEPENDENCIA

N.EVITAR PELIGROS
Uso de barreras
Grado dr autonomía. Suplencia total
M.INDEPENDENCIA
M.DEPENDENCIA

The document is from an ICU discharge report.

Hope this helps!
Cecilia Gowar Aug 14, 2017:
Agree with Phil and Joseph
philgoddard Aug 14, 2017:
That's still not very much to go on. Is this a checklist with "M. (In)dependencia" as two of the items on the list? If so, do they have anything filled in beside them? What does the Spanish say?
Leila Howden (asker) Aug 14, 2017:
Sure. It is an ICU report and lists all the different breakdowns of necesidades i.e. necesidad respiratoria etc.
Joseph Tein Aug 14, 2017:
Context You will get much better answers if you provide background information about your document -- such as type of report, who issued it (we don't need specific names), how it is being used ... sometimes the country of origin is also important to know -- as well as (in many cases) the text that comes before and after.

The KudoZ guidelines say this as well: "When asking a question, sufficient context should be provided. Even when there is no other context, the subject area and type of document should be indicated. It can be helpful to enter sentences or paragraphs where the term in question occurs."

"Assessment of requirements" is too vague to be of help.
Cecilia Gowar Aug 14, 2017:
Can you provide more context please?

Manifestations of Independence/Dependence

Manifestaciones de Independencia, Dependencia
It has to do with Virginia Henderson's needs theory.

It seems to be 'manifestación de (in)dependencia', though I'm not sure about the translation.

agree philgoddard : "Manifestation of independence" would do fine. Or you could say something like "independence benchmark".

I should have taken notice of your comment instead of 'wasting time' trying to find some helpful references! But thank you anyway, Phil :-)
