Discussion

Nelida Kreer Feb 22, 2008:
I, not a betting kind of person, would bet 10 to 1 that it stands for "Bachiller"; however, I agree with Henry's suggestion; guessing is out of the question. Yr not translating it won't substantially change yr transl of the birth certificate anyway.
Henry Hinds Feb 22, 2008:
Unless you can posiutively determine what "Br." really is, you cannot guess; just make a note stating it is "unknown". No one can expect you to know, for no other ordinary reader in the source language would have any idea either.
Nelida Kreer Feb 21, 2008:
secondary education. Perhaps a possible translation might be "advanced secondary degree in management". This would be closest. A B.A. is definitely a licenciatura, just as Henry stated, and a superior level to that of "bachillerato".
Nelida Kreer Feb 21, 2008:
Re-thinking, maybe the "Master" option is not the most felicitous solution. Henry is absolutely right about the equivalents. Only that management degrees are not earned in the Bachillerato courses, but neither is bachillerato a B.A., it is advanced
Kim Metzger Feb 21, 2008:
"educational grade"? - we call them degrees
David Hollywood Feb 21, 2008:
I think some more input from others would be helpful on "Bachiller" ... not convinced by "Masters" ...
swisstell (asker) Feb 21, 2008:
thought so too but BA to me is not an occupation but rather an educational grade
Henry Hinds Feb 21, 2008:
You all should recall that a Bachelors Degree is a "Licenciatura" and a "Bachillerato" is a High School Diploma. There are some exceptions to this, but to my knowledge Guatemala is not one of them.
R. Alex Jenkins Feb 21, 2008:
Perhaps it's 'bachelor', as in BA in Administration ?

Master in Administration

Br. is the abbreviation of Bachiller.
However, "bachiller" is not equivalent to "Bachelor" or B.A., it is rather a Master's degree .
