La spiegazione di un evento particolare è un argomento deduttivo che deve essere valido affinché la conclusione dimostri il verificarsi dell’evento. La conclusione è detta explanandum o oxplicandum o oggetto della comprensione; le premesse, dette explanans –o meglio explanantia- o explicatum o base della spiegazione, devono contenere almeno una legge generale. Tale argomento deve essere necessario. Se tali condizioni sono soddisfatte possiamo dire che la spiegazione sussume il fatto da spiegarsi sotto quelle leggi; pertanto parliamo di un modello di legge di copertura.

"Covering law" being the literal translation - but I'm not sure you want to use that - sounds rather esoteric.
