German term

anhand der ersichtlich wird

German to English Social Sciences Environment & Ecology Introductory sentences of a book
Beschreibung

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Armorel Young

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

German term (edited): eine Diskussion, anhand der ersichtlich wird, dass...
Selected

a discussion, in the course of which it becomes apparent that...

a discussion, on the basis of which it becomes apparent [to the students] that

'der' is used here as a relative pronoun, antecedent 'Diskussion' (f), anhand + genitive
https://www.deutschplus.net/pages/Prapositionen_mit_Genitiv

The two other versions here are good, but they do stray unnecessarily from structure of the source sentence.

A discussionas such cannot 'demonstrate' anything, except perhaps a failure of communication. Each contributor will have a different argument that they wish to put across (demonstrate). A consensus view may then emerge.

agree Anne Schulz : "Der Dativ ist dem Genitiv sein Tod" – the relative pronoun should actually have been "derer" in the source text ;-)

agree Thomas Ackerman, MAT : Very long, but the most appropriate response. Maybe "a discussion in which"?

agree David Hollywood : yep or "makes it clear etc."

that demonstrates

that demonstrates or that shows
Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : "Showing/demonstrating that" would be better, to avoid repeating "that".

disagree Ramey Rieger (X) : a discussion cannot demonstrate or show, it can only lead to something

agree David Hollywood : I think this is a good opton with Phil's input but still prefer Lancashireman's version
4 hrs
neutral Thomas Ackerman, MAT : I somewhat agree that discussions generally don't show much of anything. They can do many other things (e.g., prove, lead to, result in) but show/demonstrate is not one of them.

bringing to light/revealing/exposing/laying bare

Either as gerund or with 'which'
Example sentence:

The objective is to inspire discussions, revealing the extreme, misanthropic (hostile to humankind) tendencies found in the so-called deep ecology.

The objective is to inspire discussions, which would bring to light the extreme, misanthropic (hostile to humankind) tendencies found in the so-called deep ecology.

Peer comment(s):

agree Anne Schulz : // Too busy, actually. – (BTW, your remark above reminds me of an increasingly popular clincial trial blah phrase: "drug X showed an increase in [e.g.] overall survival". Why should a discussion not be able to show something, if a drug can ;-?)

draw out by means of

Streamlined version of sentence: The goal is to draw out by means of discussion the extremism and misanthropy buried in so-called deep ecology.
Peer comment(s):

agree Thomas Ackerman, MAT : This is a good option, too! I would probably offset "by means of discussion" with commas, personally.

Thanks. I considered commas, but this is not an "eats, shoots and leaves" situation :)
