wearable computing
A wearable material that performs simple logic operations electronically has been demonstrated by scientists in Sweden.
Conventional electronics can be woven into clothing, but Olle Inganäs and colleagues at Linköping University claim to be the first to produce a material in which the fibres themselves act as transistors.
This could be an important step towards developing "smart" clothes, they say - garments that monitor the vital signs of athletes or rescue workers, perhaps.
The researchers first coated ordinary fibres of polyimide with a conductive polymer. Then, to create transistors, they connected one of the fibres to another using an electrolyte made of another polymer.
Applying a voltage to the first fibre causes the electrolyte to react with the polymer coating the other fibre, switching it from a highly conductive state to a less conductive one through a reversible reduction-oxidation reaction.
Thank you!
