Jivdravya or Jivsutra

I remember something like Jivdravya or Jivsutra. Hope someone gets the clue and find the right term.

However, chromsome, in itself is a known word in Hindi and can be simply transliterated.

agree Dipak (X) : school textbooks call it GUNASUTRA.. It may not be the same in case of other Indian languages. Of course, transliteration can be used but I would go for the translation because a person stydied upto 8th and 9th standard is likely to understand it

agree Arun Singh : Jeevsutra could be more appropriate word than Ginasutra, but in schools text books, Gunsutra is used. Jeev drav is used for Protoplasm and not for chromosomes.

agree Jitendra Wagh : Transliteration should be okay. I dontthink anybody would understand Gunsutra

GUNASUTRA in Hindi /LONI-JISM in uRDU

Those who have studied in Hindi medium upto maybe 10th standard are familiar with the term GUNASUTRA. This may, however, be difficult for Urdu-knowing people because schooltextbooks are not so developed or simply do not exist. Of course. Bureau of Promotin of Urdu under theMinistry of Education Government of India recommends LONI-JISM. Here. LONI meanscolour. In GUJARATI it is called RANGSUTRA.
