English to French Tech/Engineering Military / Defense Movie script
A MP SALVE RIPS through the DOOR to the suite, sending EVERYBODY DIVING FOR COVER.
I just don't get whether it's a Military Police (MP) shooting at the main characters or something else. Does salve mean salve (décharge d'armes à feu)
Could someone give me a hand on this?

pronunciation: agreed, of course both options are possible.

semantics: to my mind, "doorway" only works if it's people bursting through; but on the likelier assumption that it's small-arms/shoulder-arms fire (assumption reinforced by use of 'rip'), then surely it's the material of the door itself that's being penetrated, so "door" would seem better.

As another aside, why "a MP ...". A native speaker would generally write "an MP ...", based on how it sounds when spoken. Another possible reason to ask whether your text is really correct and error-free.

v.q. my reference entry speculating on possible German influence.

As an aside, in English it's salvo, not salve. No matter if it's your typo, but it might matter if it's the client's, and you may wish to give them a heads up on it. The word salve exists in English, but in French it's baume, which could hardly rip through a door.

Sur MP, j'irais plus volontiers vers "pistolet mitrailleur" (vu que que le sigle apparaît sur de nombreuses armes de ce type) que vers "police militaire" (pour une question de sens, du moins a priori, sans avoir l'ensemble du contexte).

S'agissant de "salve", je me range à l'opinion exprimée qu'il s'agit d'une coquille, que le rédacteur a mis un "e" à la place du "o". Sans quoi, la phrase n'aurait résolument aucun sens.

une salve tirée par la police militaire transperce la porte

n f salve [salv]. ensemble de coups de feu tirés au même moment. Une salve d'honneur a été tirée en hommage à ce soldat. salve d'appaudissements ...

MP est un sigle, qui signifie : ... Military Police, soit police militaire...

Merci de votre réponse. Salve, en français, pas de problème. Mais ça n'a pas l'air d'exister en anglais, ça n'est en tout cas pas dans mon Harrap's. Quant à MP, je l'ai mentionné... Le problème, c'est que ça ne fait pas vraiment sens ici, aussi je me demandais s'il ne pouvait pas s'agir de qqch d'autre. Merci encore...

I wonder if it's actually the German abbreviation that's being used here. Seems more consonant with the context.

"Machine pistol" is also found, though less common (and I suspect the term was originally imported from the German), designating a smaller weapon than a sub-machine gun: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_pistol
