Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (2): writeaway, Buck

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Mark Straver Jan 10, 2009:
Perhaps leave out a name completely? Maybe it would be better not to try and make a comparison with a store chain by name, but rather leave it out and make a brief/summarised description instead of the kind of store (as Anja suggested)...

woolworths

not easy to find a shop which is similar as woolworths is generally much larger, argos is not the same system and boots is too much cosmetics and pharmacy, I think woolworths would be ok, as they too sell dvds, toys, household stuff etc (but also clothing sweets magazines, which Blokker doesn't have) another way to get round it is to say a shop which sells household goods, toys and multimedia?

yes, then you'll have to give a name!
Note from asker:
It already said in the sentence before that it is a store which sells a broad selection of household products and then it says; vergelijk met de Blokker
Peer comment(s):

neutral writeaway : Imo, the Hema is more like Woolworths.

neutral Ken Cox : with writeaway -- there probably isn't a direct equivalent in the UK. If the purpose of the comparison is to give the reader a point of rerference, 'a scaled-down Woolworths' might do the job.

neutral Kitty Brussaard : With witeaway :-)

neutral Mark Straver : There may not be a direct comparison possible. Woolworths has a different assortment although some parts overlap.

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Bedankt voor het meedenken. Het is altijd moeilijk om winkels te vergelijken omdat ze natuurlijk nooit precies hetzelfde assortiment hebben. Maar ik denk dat Woolworths toch de beste vergelijking oplevert. "

Woolworths

toevallig pas dit artikel in de Volkskrant gelezen: http://www.volkskrant.nl/economie/article1115658.ece/Britten...
De keten is dus inmiddels wel failliet maar nog steeds een begrip, succes!

neutral Kitty Brussaard : With writeaway (see below) and see also your own reference: Woolworths and the Dutch HEMA are more of a match!

Marks & Spencer

known by everyone. Woolworths is now bankrupt.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Anja Thys : no way can you compare Blokker with Marks and Spencers!!!! Even though Woollies is broke, it still is the best comparison!

disagree Dave Calderhead : no way!

disagree Textpertise : Marks & Spencer sell clothing and food, so assortment is not comparable.

The Pound Store

I would have said Woolworths a month ago, as that is undoubtedly known worldwide but, as mentioned, they are now out of business. The nearest surviving comparable in the UK is The Pound Store which sells the same sort of assortment. There are at least 70 stores around the country. However, they are relatively unknown compared to Woolworths.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Mark Straver : Pound Stores are discount/surplus stores, and Blokker is definitely not that kind of store.

Sells housewares and similar range to Blokker. Agree more similar to Woolworth than Blokker.

Dutch term (edited): vergelijkbaar met de Blokker

comparable to the Wilkinson stores

Peer comment(s):

neutral Textpertise : Have been living in UK since 1974. Never heard of this company. Blokker is well known in Holland.

With more than 300 stores in the UK, I would say that the Wilkinson (Home & Garden) stores are a retail chain like the Dutch Blokker :-)
agree Marijke Singer : I think this chain is mainly in the south of the UK but it is a good choice (sells the same stuff as Blokker). There is definitely one or more in Oxford and one in Didcot.
