Dutch term

afnamelocatie

Dutch to English Other Education / Pedagogy
De praktijkbegeleider is verantwoordelijk voor de begeleiding van de Proeve van Bekwaamheid op de afnamelocatie.

Term appears in a document about procedure of proof of competence test. It is partly done in a practical situation at a company and then a final interview.
I thought it might be "examination centre"

There is another reference within the document to afnameprocess...

U bewaakt het afnameproces en als daartoe reden is, grijpt u in of besluit u de Proeve van Bekwaamheid voortijdig te beëindigen.
which I translated as..
You monitor the deterioration of the process and if there is reason, you intervene or decide to prematurely end the Proof of Competence test.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Discussion

Barend van Zadelhoff Jul 1, 2016:
1 or 2 1) afnamelocatie --> administration site
2) afnamelocatie --> assessment site

Barend van Zadelhoff Jul 1, 2016:
You selected one possible reading, which was no answer to your question by the way, and used a completely different translation choice in your final version:

afnameproces - assessment process

I suppose you now ended up with

assessment site/location - afnamelocatie

to maintain consistency, didn't you?
darren flynn (asker) Jul 1, 2016:
Textpertise,

You are absolutely correct about deterioration being incorrect. My final revision of that phrase was..

U bewaakt het afnameproces en als daartoe reden is, grijpt u in of besluit u de Proeve van Bekwaamheid voortijdig te beëindigen.

You monitor the assessment process and if there is reason, you can intervene or decide to prematurely end the Proof of Competence test.

Barend van Zadelhoff Jun 27, 2016:
Something... ...that seems to be very pertinent to this question and possibly helpful to the asker:

Proeve van Bekwaamheid

Barend van Zadelhoff Jun 26, 2016:
I do think it is important that the whole phrase makes sense to the asker, that he knows what is between the lines, unless he already guessed this.
Textpertise Jun 26, 2016:
We hebben het toch over afname My point was that translating afnameproces as deterioration of the process is definitely wrong. Whether you want to translate U bewaakt in the present tense or whether you want to give it a jussive spin is a matter of personal taste for the translator and isn't really germane to this question in my humble opinion.
Barend van Zadelhoff Jun 26, 2016:
In simple Dutch language 'bewaken' means here 'u houdt in de gaten of alles goed verloopt/naar behoren/volgens de regels verloopt

or negatively

'u houdt in de gaten of er niet wordt afgeweken van de regels'
Michael Beijer Jun 26, 2016:
or ...
you shall monitor the administration process
or
you shall monitor the administration of the ...

bewaken = a slippery fish
Barend van Zadelhoff Jun 26, 2016:
Textpertise, am thinking of something like:

You will/ are supposed to see to it that the test is administered according to the standardized procedures

with respect to 'U bewaakt het afnameproces'
Textpertise Jun 26, 2016:
"administration" not the "deterioration" Your second translation should read: You monitor the administration of the process...etc., not the deterioration of the process. Again, I cannot provide proof of this at the moment.
If you are sure the test is being administered at an examination centre, use that. Otherwise I would go with Barend's suggestion because that covers it, wherever it is being administered.
Textpertise Jun 26, 2016:
afname means administration in testing contexts I am surprised at not finding this in my Van Dale NL-EN. I suppose you could think of it as the test administrator actually "taking" the test results from the subject.
Barend van Zadelhoff Jun 26, 2016:
Possibly: administration site (of the practical test of ability)

Not 100% sure.

Dutch term (edited): (responsible for invigilation afnamelocatie
Selected

(.... is responsible for invigilation at) the place where the test(s) takes place

that'll cover everything, might be a classroom, or practical test, or whatever
Peer comment(s):

agree Tina Vonhof (X) : 'Test location' would be shorter.

thanks, and I agree, but I think that 'test location' might sound a bit weird if it concerned a classroom type situation.
