atheneum / grammar school (UK) / high school (USA)

In the Belgian variant of NL this is also translated as "secondary school".

I would opt for grammar school if the text is to be translated to UK English.
Peer comment(s):

agree Tina Vonhof (X) : Yes, high school in the Us + Canada. All high schools offer a wide selection of subjects and the type of education you get depends on which ones you take. The highest levels of certain subjects are prerequisites for university.

Thanks Tina.
neutral Wiard Sterk : There are not many Grammar schools left in the UK and A-levels can be obtained from many other schools.

A-levels

A-levels are the required educational achievements for entry into university in the UK. You can get them at e Grammar School, an Academy School, a Comprehensive, a Public School or a Faith Based School, and soon at Michael Gove's 'Free Schools'.

Has sat/has passed the equivalent of A-levels in the Netherlands. The number of subjects passed, their nature and the grade obtained are often mentioned.

'atheneum'
There is no equivalent in English. Explain that this is a form of pre-university education similar to 'gymnasium', but without Latin or Greek.
