Counsellor

* Counsellors help clients to talk about and explore their problems. They listen carefully to what they have to say and probe deeper. They may help them to see their problems from a different perspective and help them come to a solution.
* They may deal with a wide range of personal problems: helping the bereaved, helping a woman who may be considering having an abortion, or someone with an alcohol problem.
* Some specialise, for example, in relationship difficulties, AIDS, drug or alcohol abuse, or with particular age groups - teenagers for example.

Most work is during office hours, Monday to Friday, seeing a number of clients for about an hour each. Some counsellors also work in the evening and at weekends.

Qualified counsellors start on around £14,000, and may earn up to £35,000.

Counsellors need:

* to establish a trusting relationship with clients
* to listen carefully, clarify problems, and help clients take action
* to be genuine, patient, tolerant, sensitive and stable
* to be non-judgmental

Young people can take relevant degrees or HNCs/HNDs, with counselling as some aspect of the course. The majority of people who enter training are over 40, often graduates, with much life and work experience.

There are around 300,000 counsellors in the UK. Counsellors work in education, in disability organisations and youth work, the Health Service, and agencies connected with alcohol, drugs and AIDS. Others work in large companies, which is a growing area, and in private practice as self-employed counsellors.
