German term

Rastmitnehmer

German to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks
We're talking about a motorcycle helmet here. Could this be a latching catch?

Discussion

Björn Vrooman Dec 7, 2023:
@Phil Perhaps it's a coinage by one manufacturer, but it doesn't have to be a mistranslation.

We've had this issue multiple times before; what looks like a newly minted word is essentially just two German nouns put together (since you're actually allowed to do that in German).

"Rast" is, in my opinion, short for "Rastung" here. As an example (though, that's for the visor):
"Das Klappvisier wird mit 3 Druckknöpfen am Helm befestigt und kann mittels einer fein abgestuften Rastung in jede Position gebracht werden."
https://www.motorradgarage.de/visiere

I would expect "Aufnehmer" to be used for the end piece and "Mitnehmer" for some part in the middle. Say, you've got a "Kinnriemen," as Johannes actually said (but then, inexplicably, posted something about dogs), and it needs to be put through something. Similar to:
"Ein neuer Edelstahlverschluss mit zwei Rastungen macht das Öffnen des Kinnriemens noch einfacher."
https://www.icasque.de/Motorradhelm/Klapp/neotec-ii-matt-blu...

Maybe that helps.

Best wishes

I find it suspicious that, as Johannes points out, most of the very few hits for this word relate to a brand called Helm, suggesting it's a coinage by one manufacturer.

This seems too much of a coincidence, and I wonder if Rastmitnehmer is a mistake, perhaps mistranslated from another language.
Johannes Gleim Dec 7, 2023:
@ Kartrik I also came across the company Helm first, though they don't make motorbike helmets, but sliding doors and building hardware:

latch carrier

I found the term translated as "latch carrier" in the context of helmets. See references below:

Correction: The context is sliding door systems and not helmets.

Thank you, Adrian
disagree Johannes Gleim : Sorry for disagreeing, but we are talking about motorcycle helmets, as quite different subject from building hardware and sliding doors.

Johannes Gleim, disagreeing to others' answers and throwing in as many irrelevant references as possible doesn't automagically make your answers correct ;)
agree Kim Metzger : In line with Björn's "Rastung", I think latch catch would work here. https://www.americandivingsupply.com/Latch-Catch-Assembly-p/...

There are five basic types of helmets intended for motorcycling, and others not intended for motorcycling but which are used by some riders. All of these types of helmets are secured by a chin strap, and their protective benefits are greatly reduced, if not eliminated, if the chin strap is not securely fastened so as to maintain a snug fit.

Quick Release Buckle
Quick Release Buckle fastening benefits from easy and fast closing and opening. This feature you appreciate everytime you take your helmet off frequently, for example when shopping or on the trip. A quick release buckle gives you the flexibility to remove the helmet quickly if needed.

A special locking mechanism developed by YKK is used to prevent loosening. We thought that if the special locking mechanism could be applied to the buckle of this bicycle helmet, the problem of the chinstrap loosening after prolonged use could be solved.

Despite the metal version being the least common, it is the stronger of the two. This is because it is less likely to break than the plastic micrometric closure. This type of closure is also called a quick release buckle.

neutral philgoddard : Once again, this is padded with way too many irrelevant references. Long answers aren't necessarily good answers.
