French term

hyper-intense

French to English Medical Medical: Instruments Brain MRI
Hello,

From a brain MRI report:

"En T2, la substance blanche sus-tentorielle prei-ventriculaire est fortement hyper-intense"

English seems to prefer the noun form of this - "hyperintensities". But how would this be phrased?
Can anyone help provide a correct translation and explanation?

Many thanks in advance.

I would say "is significantly hyperintense"

Hyperintense on an MRI means "more white" in appearance with regard to the surrounding tissue.

You could consider translating "hyper-intense" and "la substance blanche" by saying "white matter hyperintensities" but then I think the sentence might start sounding a bit awkward with all of the other adjectives, IMHO.

"most white matter tracts were significantly hyperintense relative to cortex and deep gray matter structures." - https://www.mri-q.com/uploads/3/4/5/7/34572113/high_b_value_...

"markedly" would also be a good option - "and they therefore characteristically show a markedly hyperintense signal on T2WI" - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7768868/

agree philgoddard : I wouldn't translate "fortement". That's already covered by "hyper".

It does seem a bit redundant, but then articles do seem to describe "mild" as well as "significant" hyperintensity so I can only imagine that it means that some hyperintensities are whiter than others
