‘barring’, in the context of large rotating electrical machines (motors, alternators, etc.), and also to large diesel or steam engines, refers to the manner in which, prior to starting or for test purposes, the main shaft (which carries the rotor in Asker’s context) is moved slowly to a pre-determined position. Barring may be achieved using an auxiliary motor or engine, compressed air (in the case of diesel engines) or manually. It is the manual method which lends its name to the process, because in the early days the rotation was done manually, using a long steel bar (similar to a ‘barre à mine’) which engaged in notches on the periphery of the machine’s flywheel, and provided considerable leverage.
