German term

Getriebe

German to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks
My text concerns an "E-Steller" consisting of an E-Motor and a Getriebe and used to actuate an EGR valve. How would "Getriebe" be translated in this context? I am using US English.

Sample texts:
"...der E-Steller (E-Motor mit Getriebe) muss dieses Moment über den Temperaturbereich, Betriebsspannungsbereich und Lebensdauer aufbringen können.

"Die Verstellmechanik ist das Bindeglied zwischen E-Motor und dem zu verstellenden Element. Ein geeignetes Getriebe ist für die Kraftübersetzung nötig."

Discussion

Rolf Buesken (X) Jun 18, 2019:
An electric motor with an attached gear box (very common) is called a geared motor in Australia.
Richard Stephen Jun 17, 2019:
@ Eleanore Transmission or gearbox would be correct, if you're speaking of the device between the engine and remaining drive train, but this is part of the "Exhaust Gas Recirculation" (EGR) system. (Not an e-car, because they don't have any exhaust gas to recycle). It is a relatively small valve which allows exhaust gas to flow back into the intake manifold and added to the combustion mixture to reduce undesired emissions. It is necessary to regulate the amount of exhaust gas being recycled to match the specific operating state. Thus it is equipped with an actuator, consisting of a small electric motor and gear.
Eleanore Strauss Jun 17, 2019:
conventional cars Getriebe is the transmission in US English... in the UK it is called the gearbox... at least based on my experience in the automotive industry. Not sure how this works in e-cars.

Gear

Seems pretty literal, but I can't find any better solution and it does fit.

gearbox

In this case the text distinguishes between the actuator (E-Steller) and the gearbox (Getriebe), which is a component of the actuator.

transmission (gearbox)

I would prefer "transmission" if used for electric cars. Otherwise the term "gearbox" is applicable, too, but can be mismatched with the whole powertrain.

Getriebe n (mit veränderbarer Übersetzung, Kfz) / transmission n, gearbox, n gearcase (US)
Mechanisches Getriebe (handgeschaltet, Kfz) / manual transmission, manual gearbox
(Kučera, Dictionary of Exact Science and Technology)

Ein Getriebe (oder Umformerelement) ist ein Maschinenelement, mit dem Bewegungsgrößen geändert werden können. Mitunter spielt die Änderung einer Kraft oder eines Drehmoments die entscheidende Rolle.

A transmission is a machine in a power transmission system, which provides controlled application of the power. Often the term transmission refers simply to the gearbox that uses gears and gear trains to provide speed and torque conversions from a rotating power source to another device.
In British English, the term transmission refers to the whole drivetrain, including clutch, gearbox, prop shaft (for rear-wheel drive), differential, and final drive shafts. In American English, however, the term refers more specifically to the gearbox alone, and detailed usage differs.
:
The most common use is in motor vehicles, where the transmission adapts the output of the internal combustion engine to the drive wheels. Such engines need to operate at a relatively high rotational speed, which is inappropriate for starting, stopping, and slower travel. The transmission reduces the higher engine speed to the slower wheel speed, increasing torque in the process. Transmissions are also used on pedal bicycles, fixed machines, and where different rotational speeds and torques are adapted.
Often, a transmission has multiple gear ratios (or simply "gears") with the ability to switch between them as speed varies. This switching may be done manually (by the operator) or automatically. Directional (forward and reverse) control may also be provided. Single-ratio transmissions also exist, which simply change the speed and torque (and sometimes direction) of motor output.

An internal combustion vehicle has a multi-speed gearbox with numerous ratios; nearly every electric car has a single-speed transmission.

One of the biggest gripes about electric cars from many die-hard auto enthusiasts, aside from not having a manual transmission, is that EVs lose all oomph at higher speeds. While this is true, there's a very easy way to explain reason behind it: The lack of a transmission. Over the past two years, more original equipment manufacturers are dabbling in the world of transmissions for electrified cars, and it's going to change the very way many of us view EVs.
:
Companies like engineering firm GKN and renowned transmission-maker ZF have already been hard at work making this a reality. Using a transmission like GKN's eTwinsterX, an electric car is equipped with a secondary gear ratio.

Electric Vehicle Transmissions
The electrification of road-going vehicles is gathering momentum like nothing the automotive industry has seen for a while. Which electric vehicle transmission to use is one of the questions automotive designers are grappling with as they rush to develop new electric cars to meet demand.
