If sad or down mood is denied, re-evaluate score after the euthymic baseline is established to determine if there is any qualitative difference.
Apparent Sadness
Pay attention to facial expression, tone of voice, rate of speech, posture, tearfulness, and mood reactivity.
Factor in all of your observations throughout the interview and revisit your rating, if necessary.
If the subject's description of their affect is inconsistent with your observation, question the subject about this.
To evaluate range of affect display, be sure to inquire about what the subject's appearance is like if not sad or down.
