Un'alternativa è "what became of", ma a me "whatever happened" suona meglio.

PS. Are there some other native English speakers out there who would like to add their opinion?...

"Whatever Happened to ..? was a series of six plays broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 1994. They covered the fate of various fictional characters, such as Popeye and Susan Foreman, the granddaughter of the Doctor in Doctor Who."

Grazie, Ivana.
neutral Angie Garbarino : what happened to, whatever sognifica qualsiasi qualunque , se usa whatever deve girare la frase

Grazie, Angioletta.

Thanks, Lindsay.
agree Fiorsam : d'accordo con angioletta: "what happened" or "what may have happened" considering the subjunctive in the original.

Grazie, Fiorsam. "Whatever happened to" is correct English though.
agree snatalieg : what could have happened to

Grazie, snatalieg!
neutral silvia b (X) : what happened, non whatever/"whatever happened" is correct EN - but it's not exactly what "cosa ne sia stato" means :)/no problem. I did not disagree, I simply pointed out that in my opinion the correct translation, in this case, is "what happened"

Sorry Silvia, I don't mean to be nasty... What I'm trying to say is that it's always a good idea to check the actual use of expressions before disagreeing. No grudges; we're all colleagues...

Grazie, transparx. "Whatever happened to" is correct English though.
